Help 10 Livestock Guardian Dogs Protect 200+ Animals
They Aren't Pets - They're Working Dogs
Livestock guardian dogs are bred for one purpose: to protect livestock. When farms shut down, these dogs lose their identity. They can't be house pets - they're too large, too independent, too driven by instinct.
Most end up in kill shelters. We give them sanctuary and purpose.
We Let Them Choose Their Job
Unlike traditional shelters, we don't force dogs into roles. We introduce them to different animals and let them choose which livestock, poultry, or waterfowl they want to guard.
The Three Puppeteers chose the waterfowl and chickens
Tiggy and Ursa chose the goats and sheep
Zeus and Apollo guard as a roaming team
Dante and Eddie patrol the perimeter together
This isn't training. This is restoration of their natural instinct.
They Guard Until They Can't
We've lost two of these majestic dogs to bone cancer. They guarded valiantly until they could no longer stand. Both required very expensive procedures and medications to manage their pain and maintain their quality of life until the end.
Livestock guardian dogs don't retire. They serve until their last breath.
MONTHLY CARE COSTS: $150 PER DOG
Caring for 9 large, elderly working dogs is expensive:
What $150/Month Provides for One Dog:
π°Β Premium Large-Breed FoodΒ - We order dog food by the pallet. Food costs are astronomical for 9 dogs weighing 80-136 lbs each.
π°Β Joint SupplementsΒ - Glucosamine, chondroitin, omega fatty acids for hip and joint health
π°Β Pain Management - Prescription anti-inflammatory medications for arthritis and age-related pain
π°Β Parasite PreventionΒ - Monthly flea, tick, and heartworm prevention
π°Β Veterinary CareΒ - Regular check-ups, bloodwork, dental care, emergency treatment
π°Β Surgery & RecoveryΒ - Torn ligament repairs (like the Three Pupeteers), cancer treatment, emergency procedures
π°Β MedicationsΒ - Daily medications for chronic conditions (like Ursa's numerous prescriptions)
π°Β Large-Breed Health MonitoringΒ - Bone cancer screening and heart health checks
Your $150 monthly donation sponsors one dog's complete care.
WHAT DAILY CARE LOOKS LIKE
Morning Routine (6:00 AM):
Check each dog's condition (mobility, energy, appetite)
Administer morning medications and supplements
Provide fresh food and water (large quantities!)
Monitor for injuries from nighttime patrols
Check livestock/poultry for any overnight incidents
Throughout the Day:
Dogs guard their chosen animals, resting in holes that they dug for that purpose
Monitor for limping, favoring legs, signs of pain
Provide shade, water stations across 35 acres
Watch for predator threats (coyotes, bobcats, hawks)
Refill water bowls multiple times (large dogs drink A LOT)
Evening Routine (6:00 PM):
Evening medications and supplements
Fresh food and water
Final health check before nighttime patrol
Ensure dogs have shelter if needed (most prefer to stay outside with their animals)
This is every single day. No breaks. No vacations. These dogs never stop working.
WHY LIVESTOCK GUARDIAN DOGS MATTER
They Protect 200+ Rescued Animals
Without our LGDs, our sanctuary couldn't exist. They keep:
89 chickens safe from hawks and foxes
60 ducks and 32 geese safe from coyotes and bobcats
12 goats and 3 sheep safe from predators
2 horses safe on pasture
All animals safe 24/7, 365 days a year
Our dogs are the reason Lucky the goose survived. They are the reason Baby Goose is alive. They are the reason Gertrude the chicken can free-range safely.
They Deserve to Work
Taking away a livestock guardian dog's job is like taking away their soul. These dogs need to protect. They need purpose, instinct, and duty.
We don't just shelter them. We restore their identity.
They Age Serving Others
Ursa is 14. Zeus is 10. These dogs have arthritis, chronic pain, torn ligaments, age-related illnesses. They should be retired.
They refuse. They live to work.
The least we can do is provide them with the medical care, pain management, and supplements they need to keep doing what they love for as long as possible.
They give everything. We owe them everything.
