89 Chickens - Each with a Story of Survival
๐ Gertrude - The Ultimate Survivor
Her Story:
Gertrude arrived at our sanctuary in devastating condition. She was severely underweight, terrified of people, and had a zip-tie cruelly fastened around part of her beak.
Most people would have given up on her. We didn't.
Today:
Gertrude has a full, beautiful coat of feathers and confidently roams the entire sanctuary like the queen she is. She lays gorgeous eggs, has befriended our volunteers, and mentors newly arrived hens who come to us in similar condition.
Gertrude's transformation reminds us why this work matters.
๐ Henrietta - Dog Attack Survivor
Her Story:
Henrietta came to us with severe injuries from a dog attack. Her back was covered in wounds, she had lost significant feathers, and she was too traumatized to eat properly. She spent her first week hiding in the corner of our medical coop
Today:
With patience, veterinary care, and gentle handling, Henrietta has blossomed. Her feathers have grown back, her wounds have healed, and she now enjoys human interaction. She's particularly fond of our sanctuary manager and follows her around hoping for extra treats.
Henrietta proves that healing is possible with the right care.ย
๐ย The Golden Girls - Senior Sanctuary
Their Story:
Five senior hens arrived together from a closing farm. Their previous owner could no longer care for them and wanted to ensure they had a safe retirement home rather than being culled. These girls had spent years laying eggs and deserved to live out their golden years in peace
Today:
The Golden Girls spend their days dust bathing in the Texas sun, teaching younger birds proper coop etiquette, and enjoying mealworms as special treats. They've formed an inseparable friendship circle and prove thatย senior animals deserve love and care just as much as younger ones.
HOW THESE CHICKENS CAME TO US
Rescued from Animal Control
Many of our chickens were deemed "nuisance animals" or "illegal livestock" by local authorities. They were scheduled for euthanasia.
We stepped in. Instead of being killed, these beautiful birds were brought to our sanctuary where they now live in safety.
Rescued from Food Markets
Several of our chickens were destined for slaughter at live food markets. Hours before their deaths, we intervened and brought them home.
Now they free-range in our pastures, lay eggs, and live the lives they deserve.
Abandoned & Dumped
Chickens are often bought as "cute chicks" for Easter or backyard flocks. When they stop laying eggs or owners lose interest, they're dumped in parks, ditches, or on roadsides.
These birds can't survive alone. Domestic chickens lack survival skills and become easy prey for predators. Without sanctuary, they starve or are killed.
We give them permanent homes.
Special Needs & Medical Cases
Some chickens arrive with serious medical conditions:
Bumblefoot infections requiring surgery and booties
Pecking injuries from aggressive flockmates
Crop disorders requiring specialized support (Birdy Bra)
Mobility issues needing adapted housing
Feather loss from over-mating or stress
Chronic illnesses requiring daily medication
These birds require individual care, specialized housing, and ongoing veterinary support.

WHY CHICKENS NEED SANCTUARY
Chickens Are Intelligent, Social Animals
Chickens are far more intelligent than most people realize:
They recognize over 100 individual faces (human and chicken)
They have complex communication with over 30 distinct vocalizations
They dream during REM sleep
They teach their chicks which foods are safe
They form lasting friendships and grieve when flockmates die
Chickens deserve care, respect, and safety.
Backyard Flock Abandonment is Common
Every year, thousands of backyard chickens are:
Dumped when they stop laying eggs (typically after 2-3 years)
Abandoned when owners move or lose interest
Surrendered when medical bills become too expensive
Given away when roosters become "too loud" for neighbors
Released into parks or wild when unwanted
Most don't survive. We give them a chance.
